Brief parish profile

Sharnbrook is a village of about 2300 people in N. Bedfordshire, 10 miles north of Bedford and just to the West of the A6. The River Ouse forms the Southern boundary of the Parish. It has several shops, a Lower School and a very successful and large Upper School, which takes pupils from the whole of N. Bedfordshire and further afield. Though there are still several farms in the village, it is primarily a commuter village today, and also popular with retired people.

St Peter's Church is moderate Catholic in churchmanship with a choir, an orchestra for family services and a mixture of Prayer Book and common worship services. There are two groups for young people of different ages which meet on Sunday mornings twice a month and attend family worship in Church on the other two Sundays. The Church is increasingly used for concerts and has contacts with both schools that also make use of the building from time to time.

There is an active Churches Together involving Anglicans, Methodists (who have a Church in the village) and Roman Catholics (who make use of St Peters for a few midweek services). The Evangelical Minister (whose church meets in the Upper School) attends Churches Together as an observer. There are normally two or three joint services during the year with a number of other activities.

The link with the Calpino Parish of 'Christ the Worker' was launched at a service in Calpino in September 2002 attended by the Rector of St. Peters and his wife. There were two visits by Calpino parishioners to Sharnbrook in 2003 and two return visits by Sharnbrook parishioners to Calpino in 2004. See Web site - St Peter's Section/Italian Link - for detailed information.
